How Does CBD Work

All mammals possess a biological and neurological system called the Endocannabinoid System (ECS), which is responsible for receiving and processing nutritional cannabinoids. The ECS is involved in a variety of important psychological and physiological processes, acting as a master regulator. 

The ECS is essentially a signaling system, which responds to certain states of health and relays instructions from the brain to cell receptors throughout the body. ​​Some of the bodily functions that are believed to be controlled in part by the ECS include digestion, mood, sleep cycles, circulation, immune function, and pain response, among many others. 

Studies have shown that a variety of ailments can result when these systems are not balanced and functioning properly. Supplementing with CBD may help remedy these issues.

One category of active compounds produced in the cannabis plant are known as phytocannabinoids. The strains of cannabis from which pure CBD is extracted are known as phytocannabinoid-rich hemp, or PCR hemp. The hemp plant offers a class of cannabis strains that contains negligible levels of THC. And PCR hemp produces scores of unique phytocannabinoids, the most abundant of which is CBD. THC levels in the hemp plant are less than three parts in 1,000, or 0.3%, which is not enough to have any noticeable effect. This is why hemp plants yield safe and effective CBD products for those who choose to supplement.

Phytocannabinoids affect the endocannabinoid system in much the same way as the endocannabinoids produced naturally by the body. Supplementation with phytocannabinoids found in CBD oil — such as cannabidiol — can help to make up for endocannabinoid deficiencies. CBD products act as a master rebalancer. 

Phytocannabinoids also provide health benefits outside of the ECS, acting as anti-inflammatories, antioxidants, and antibiotics. Anti-inflammatory compounds reduce inflammation — because inflammation is the most common source of pain. Antioxidants help to keep bodies clear of harmful toxins that can harm cells and increase the likelihood of abnormal cell growth. And antibiotics help kill germs and fight infections.

Cannabinoid receptors are located all over the human body, with a major concentration located in both the brain and nervous system. These concentrations are known as CB1 receptors. Those located inside inflammatory cells and in the immune system are known as CB2 receptors. Endocannabinoids produced by the body bind to endocannabinoid receptors — initiating processes that help us to eat, sleep, remember information, and heal following an injury. 

Other cannabinoids also help balance the body’s endocannabinoid levels when there is either an over-production, or a shortage, of them. In a healthy human body, the ECS generates its own endocannabinoids. But in an unhealthy ECS, cannabinoids are unable to do their job. Research suggests that supplementation with pure CBD oil binds to receptors and compensates for shortage and over-production, allowing the body to work as intended and bringing all systems back into symbiosis and homeostasis.
